Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is the following sequel to
Hellboy (2004). It is the second instalment to the movie that is based on the Dark Horse Comics character,
Hellboy.
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army was directed by
Guillermo del Toro, who did a great job in making
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army a brilliant action packed movie. If your expectation of
Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is anticipating something different than the ordinary ‘superhero’ themed movie, you will be pleased with this one.
The story revolves around the Underworld and The Golden Army, which was created for the King of Elves, Balor
(Roy Dotrice). The Golden Army created a chaos and caused bloodshed between both worlds and King Balor was forced to make a decision to let the humans keep their cities and the mystical creatures, their forests. The crown that was needed to revive The Golden Army was broken into three parts- one to the humans, another to King Balor and the last piece to his daughter, Princess Nuala
(Anna Watson). Obviously his son Prince Nuada
(Luke Goss) did not agree with the truce and so decided to declare war with the humans.
On his mission to repossess the pieces of the broken crowns, Prince Nuada stole the first piece from an auction, killing his father for the second, and had to hunt down his twin sister, Princess Nuala who fled with the final piece.
Somewhere in the movie, Princess Nuala crossed paths with the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defence (BPRD) and Hellboy
(Ron Perlman) and company vowed to protect her along with the rest of the world from the upcoming disruption caused by the mystical creatures. Even though Princess Nuala tried to hide from her twin brother, they shared some sort of an unspoken connection that eventually leads the both of them back to each other.
Like any other action packed movie, this one is not spared from all the (mild) violence and great action moves that were portrayed by the characters in the movie. Humour was also another element that revolved around this movie so you will be assured plenty of laughs ahead. Love was also another endearing factor that was incorporated into this film (guess who fell in love?) and a cheesy soundtrack, ‘Can’t Smile Without You’ was played in one of the movie scenes.
CGI effects were used in this movie too. Action scenes between Hellboy and Co. against various mystical creatures and Prince Nuada were peppered with CGI effects that might take your breath away.
The downside though, the fight between the Golden Army and Hellboy and Co. were short-lived. If only the Golden Army was unleashed onto the human world…
In conclusion, this movie is suited for action packed movie lovers, as well as for
Hellboy comic fans. Although the fight scenes might not feel sufficient enough for the audience, it should keep you yearning for more.
